The major cultural event that takes place in the Westway area is the Notting Hill Carnival, so it’s natural that the Green Westway campaign takes an interest in seeing how the carnival could become more sustainable. The Xixi Electrical initiative – a collaboration between a Brazilian NGO, an ad-agency and a tech company – might well be a step towards a sustainable carnival.
The Xixi Electrical project seeks to address the public urination problem at Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival by placing public urinals around the city that converts the pee into power. The urinals are like mini-hydro-electric power plants, the flow of urine is used to rotate a dynamo generating energy, which is then is stored in batteries to power a soundsystem float. What’s stopping us from harness Notting Hill Carnival pee to generate music?
